Cataloochee Ski Area Law Enforcement Days this week
February 2-3 Law Enforcement Days at Cataloochee Ski Area Cataloochee supports law enforcement by offering a special reduced rate for law enforcement personnel with valid i.d. and their families. The special package is only $25 per person and includes a 1 1/2 hour lesson, lift ticket for either day, twilight or night skiing and rental equipment. The combined savings is $56 per person over Cataloochee's regular rates.

Snowmaking resumes on the NC Slopes
The unusually moderate winter temperatures have been challenging the NC Ski Resorts and Areas all season. The cold snap this weekend is allowing snowmaking to resume at Cataloochee Ski Area, Appalachian Ski Mountain, Beech Mountain Ski Resort, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort and Wolf Ridge Ski Resort. Sapphire Valley remains closed.
While skiing on slopes with active snowmaking, be sure to come prepared with hats and goggles as well as warm outer gear.

Snowman Building Contest this weekend at Appalachian Ski Mountain
January 29 from 9:30 AM - Appalachian Ski Mountain (ASM) hosts a Snowman Building Contest in a designated special snow-play area on Avery’s Appal and will have it stocked with plenty of snow for Sunday’s Snowman Building Contest.
Families and Groups of up to 5 people can sign up for the Contest beginning at 9:30 AM in the Main Office on the lower level of the Base Lodge. Registration for the event is FREE, but limited to the first 25 groups of people that sign up. Appalachian will supply standard Snowman accessories (coal & carrots). Additional creativity and flair is encouraged and can be brought in by the groups registering.
The Snowman Building Contest will be held from 10:30 AM -noon and awards for Snowmen will be presented immediately thereafter.

Scaly Mountain Update for 1-20-12
Today at Scaly Mountain Outdoor Center: Open for tubing, ice skating and bungee trampoline from 9 AM to 6 PM. Adults and Children: $24.00(tax included) for a 2 hour session. Participants must be 42 inches or taller, and 4 years old to ride. The Kiddie slope is also open for young tubers at $12 for 2 hours. Group rates available for parties of 20 or more.

Telemark Festival this weekend at Beech Mountain
January 21 - 2nd Annual Telemark Festival at Beech Mountain Resort. This gathering of local and regional skiers will convene to share good company along with technique and equipment insight. Telemark skiing, also known as "free heel skiing", involves removing (or detaching) the heel bindings from a pair of skis so the toe is the only part of the boot bound to the ski. This technique is also used for cross-country skiing.
There will be a "Boot Demo" for those interested in trying telemark skiing and Roots Rideshop will offer discounts on all apparel and merchandise for telemark skiiers.

Middle and High School Racing on Hold at Cataloochee
Cataloochee Ski Area has announced its Middle and High School Racing is on hold this week, but will return to racing for Race #2 in the series, next Tuesday, January 17 for middle school, and on Wednesday, January 18, for high school. All racers that have a Race Pass for the season can come out and ski or ride on either or both nights this week on your Race Pass.

Appalachian Ski Mountain will be closed January 11 both day & night sessions due to forecasted thunderstorms. The storms create potentially hazardous conditions on the slopes, risking the safety of skiers and boarders. ASM plans to resume a regular schedule tomorrow, January 12 with cold air predicted to follow the line of storms, allowing great conditions the upcoming MLK weekend.

January 10 Sugar Mountain Ski Resort offers its annual Septuagenarian Benefits and Party Every January Sugar recognizes the wonderful contribution seniors make to the sport of skiing by throwing a party. This year's party will be held at 12:00 PM in the Last Run Lounge.
Anyone 70 and older can qualify for complimentary skiing/riding at Sugar Mountain Resort. To obtain your complimentary skiing/riding privileges stop by Sugar Mountain Resort's administration office, located on the second floor of the main lodge building and present a photo ID. A season pass will be issued to you for a processing fee of $10 or you may also chose to receive a daily ticket at no charge.

Sapphire Valley Ski Slopes Now open for the 2012 season
The last of the NC Ski Resorts and Areas to open for the 2012 Season, Sapphire Valley Ski, welcomed its first skiers yesterday at noon. The Sapphire ski hill consists of two runs, one each for intermediate and beginner skiers, and features runs up to 100 feet in length with a vertical drop of 200 feet. Beginners receive the personal attention necessary to master the basics of downhill skiing or snowboarding, and seasoned veterans can hone their skills.
Sapphire is skiing today on 2 slopes with 2 lifts and a base of 48-66 inches groomed surface with snowmaking continuing.

January 7 Ladies Park Night At Appalachian Ski Mountain a special terrain park area is constructed with features specifically designed for learning and progression that will be open to ladies only. Women of all ages and abilities are welcome, for both ski and snowboard, to get together and ride in a laid-back environment among friends. Appalachian Ski Mountain is located in Blowing Rock NC.

College Night Tonight at Wolf Ridge
January 5 at Wolf Ridge Ski Resort - College night tonight. College students get $15 lift tickets with their college ID. Skiing is currently on 5 slopes and 2 lifts with a base of 30-38 inches on a groomed powder surface. Tubing is open but the Terrain Park remains closed.
Try Snowshoeing FREE this weekend at Sugar Mountain Resort
January 7 - 17th annual National Winter Trails Day at Sugar Mountain Resort. The event offers children and adults new to snow sports the chance to try snowshoeing for FREE. Discover the fun and fitness of snow sports. Snowshoe rental and guided tours are free. Guided tours are available on a first-come first-serve basis at 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3 pm and 4pm. The program includes a 45 minute tour and snowshoe rental. Adult tours are for 12 years or older. Children's tours are for 8-11 year olds. Sign up at least 15 minutes prior to your tour time at the Ski/Snowboard School.

Tube World Re-opens Today at 2 PM
Tube World in Maggie Valley NC will re-open today at 2 PM after several days of snowmaking. Tubing will open at 2 PM with tubing sessions at 2, 4, 6, and 8pm. Cost for tubing is $25 and tubing sessions will last 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Appalachian Ski Mountain Fresh Fridays
January 6 Fresh Fridays at Appalachain Ski Mountain, 940 Ski Mountain Rd in Blowing Rock, NC. Hit the slopes in a low-key, relaxed jam session format in which riders can emjoy the night's new setup as many times as they want and in any order they want, just like a normal day of riding with friends.
Registration 5:00-6:30 at the registration desk on the Upper Level of the Lodge. The shred session will last from 7:00 – 8:00, with awards taking place nearby the setup immediately after the jam ends.

Cataloochee opens more Trails
Today at Cataloochee Ski Area - skiing on 14 slopes and trails with 5 lifts operating on a base of 18"-50" and a groomed surface for day, twilight and night skiing. Snowmaking will continue throughout the day and evening.
Winterfest this weekend on Beech Mountain
January 7-8 Winterfest The town of Beech Mountain and Beech Mountain Ski Resort present a variety of events throughout the weekend to get the official start of ski season underway. The town of Beech Mountain will host the North Carolina State Championship Snowshoe Race on January 7.
The weekend's events will include the the annual bathing beauty contest, the Village Rail Jam, the Cardboard Box Derby’s Visual Competition, huge sales on apparel and equipment, live music and more.
January 7 - Roots Rideshop Grand Opening Celebration. Beech Mountain resort's newest addition, Roots Rideshop will host the largest sale the High Country has ever seen. Find competitive prices on apparel as well as ski and snowboard equipment. All purchases will receive a raffle ticket for a drawing at the Rail Jam.
Roots Rideshop's indoor skate ramp will be open to the public throughout the day. Ski and snowboard demos will also be featured. The Roots Rail Jam will begin at 4:30 PM on January 7 in the heart of the Beech Tree Village. This spectator-friendly event will feature Ski and Snowboard categories with $1,000 in Roots Rideshop credit for first prize in each. Second and third place winners will receive prizes from Smith, Scott, Armada, Flow, Bataleon, Vans, Spyder, Dakine, Billabong, and Loki. There is no entry fee for this Rail Jam! Visit Roots Rideshop from 1 PM. to 4:30 PM to register for the event.

Hawksnest Tubing Closed today
Due to the forecast weather of windy, cold and snow showers, Hawksnest will not be open for snow tubing and zipline tours on Monday, Jan 2. Making snow will proceed in hopes of opening more of our snow tubing park when the weather allows.

Today at Appalachian Ski Mountain - ASM will be skiing today with 7 slopes open, including: Upper & Lower Big Appal, Appaltizer, Avery’s Appal, Strudel, Orchard Run, and Appaljack with 7 trails and 5 lifts on a base of 13 - 23 inches. Snowmaking will continue throughout the day and evening.
The Appal Jam Terrain Park is currently closed in order to make a substantial amount of snow for terrain park features. The Appaljack Terrain Park is open on a limited basis with a couple of small progression features setup daily (no park pass required).

Cataloochee Offering FREE Beginner Lessons
Take advantage of Free Beginner Lessons with Cataloochee Rentals available on Non-Holiday Monday through Thursdays. Make sure your first on-snow experience is a good one. These one and a half hour sessions are offered throughout the season and lesson times are 9:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, 3:30pm, 5:30pm and 7:15pm. You need to be at the area and signed up for your lesson at least 30 minutes prior to the time your lesson begins.
Wolf Ridge Ski Resort opens for the 2011-12 Season
Today at Wolf Ridge Ski Resort - Day skiing from 9 AM - 4:30 PM on 5 slopes with 2 lifts and a base of 10-18 inches. Tubing is also open, but the Terrain Park remains closed.
